This route takes us from the Upper Engadin to Livigno (IT), mostly along well-known roads, but almost exclusively on trails and dirt tracks.

Zuoz is chosen as the starting point for this tour, but the route is easily accessed from any of the villages and towns between Zuoz and Pontresina. First, between Chamues-ch and Pontresina, we have time to enjoy the idyllic route along the Lej da Gravatscha; shortly afterwards we follow the new river bed of the Flaz, travelling along its embankment. We bypass Punt Muragl on the mountain side, then travel along the main road through Pontresina with views of the Val Roseg. As we leave Pontresina we take a trail on the left parallel to the Bernina road, which rejoins the road again at Montebello. After we have crossed the railway line, there is a car park on the right with rewarding views of the Morteratsch Glacier. After approx. 1 km on the busy road we once again leave the road behind before rejoining it for a few metres at Bernina Suot in the direction of the Val da Fain (Heutal). As a reward for the ascent we arrive at Alp La Stretta, which is open during the season and serves food. From here it's another 2 km of relatively flat trail to Stretta, the country's border and the break-off point into the Valle della Forcola, where a steep downhill trail awaits us to take us back to the road to Livigno. Just a few tracks running parallel to the main road left and we have reached Livigno.

Author’s recommendation

The tour takes us away from the main thoroughfares into the duty-free area of Livigno in Italy, which is why you need to take your passport or ID card with you and take note of the customs regulations.

From Livigno back to the Engadin you can take the bus either to Zernez or over Forcola di Livigno to Samedan or St. Moritz.
