Two Graubünden bike highlights in four days
The landscape around the Swiss national park is setting of one of the most attractive mountain bike tours of Graubünden and Switzerland. The national park is crossed in four stages – and without luggage, which is brought from hotel to hotel every day. Three hotel categories are available and many bike highlights like the cliff ravine in the Val d'Uina, the Passo del Gallo and the Bernina express trail wait for their discovery.

 1. Stage: Scuol–Val Müstair, 46 km, 1878 metres in altitude difference
The 4 day long tour with start in Scuol begins on an impressive smuggler trail in Val d'Uina, which has been carved into the rock. 100 metres over the ground of the ravine, a head for hights is needed in spite of the safeguarding with chains. The following single trail leads to the Sesvenna hut (2256m). The further trail, mostly on broken rock and a short part on the main road lead down to the Südtiroler village Laatsch (1250m). Following the stream Rom, the daily destination in the Val Müstair is reached.

2. Stage: Val Müstair–Livigno, 50 km, 2286 metres in altitude difference
From the stage site, the day tour starts with a diligent piece of work over Valchaca (1552m), in opposite direction of the route No. 444 (National park bike marathon) on a gravel path trough the forest to Tschierv (1660m). The ascent to the Ofenpass starts here (pass road nearly 5 km). On the pass summit (2149m), a flow trail branches off on the left side down to Alp Buffalora (2038m). The ascent to Furcla del Fallo (2080m) is steep and finishes in a great trail to the pass summit. Afterwards, a singel trail leads to the Lago di Livigno. The following route stage to the Passo di Fraéle (1952m) is nearly flat. The Route leads onwards to Casine di Trela (2170m) on a flow trail over the Passo di Val Trela (2295m), after Ponte delle Capre (1810m) on hard broken rock to Livigno (1805m), the stage finish.

3. Stage: Livigno–Poschiavo, (approx. 43 km, 1303 metres in altitude difference) – Zuoz/S-chanf/Cinuos-chel (approx. 40 km, 613 metres in altitude difference)
The trip from Livigno in direction of Forcola di Livigno (2316m) runs on the new bike route as well as the pass street and is perfectly made to start rolling. At the point «Baitel del Gras degli Agnelli», the trail branches off to the right, gets steeper and ends in a carrying passage until the lookout «La Stretta» (2476m). A single trail runs to the Alp la Stretta (2427m). An alp street leads onwards to the parking place of the Diavolezza mountain railway (2093m). The route to Poschiavo can be made on the «Poschiavino Trail» along the Poschiavino or alongside the Bernina train route passing the Lago Bianco (2234m) to the Bernina pass as well as the lookout of the 1200 metres of altitude difference single trail experience «Bernina-Express» to Poschiavo. The partly difficult trail (S2, partly large stone plates) continues via Alp Grüm (2091m), Cavaglia (1703m) and Cadera (1461m), the train tracks are crossed time and time again. In Poschiavo (1014m), it is worth to drink a coffee on the piazza and to enjoy the italian flair of the village, before the route with the bernina train is begun.

From Poschiavo, all the metres of altitude difference are ascended by train again to the train station of Bernina Suot (2046m) and onwards to Pontresina (1805m). To get to the destination of the stage finish, the train needs to be changed in Pontresina in direction to Scuol-Tarasp. Optionally, this route from Bernina Suot along the Morteratsch glacier to Pontresina (1805m) can also be covered by bike. Onwards on the gravel road to Punt Muragl (1738m), along the Engadin airport to the stage finish S-chanf.

4. stage: Zuoz/s-chanf/Cinuos-chel – Scuol, approx. 47 km, 1335 metres in altitude difference
From S-chanf (1669m), the track continues on the route No. 444 "national park bike marathon" alongside the route of the Räthische Bahn to Zernez (1485m) and onwards alongside the Inn to Susch (1426m). From here, a gravel raod follows to Lavin (1361m) and onwards to the hamlet "Sur en d'Ardez' (1469m), a short way on the main road to Ardez (1464m). A short, steep ascent now leads back to the Route No. 444 to Ftan. From Ftan Pitschen (1644m), a difficult singe trail, crossing the street twice, leads onwards to Scuol. Afterwards, two turns follow (approx. 1.3 km) on the main street, before the way branches off on the right side at Putschigls (1361m). The single trail leads via Nairs (1191m) to the train station Scuol (1250m).

Author’s recommendation

An alternative to the route of the 3. stage via "La Stretta" offers the new and attractive "Val Minur Marmotta-Trail", which connects the Forcola di Livigno with the Forcola Minor, reaches the highest point at Motta Bianca (2561m) and leads onwards to Ospizio Bernina.

Because of the many alternatives (Val Minur Marmotta-Trail, Poschiavino Trail or Bernina Express singletrail, departure from Bernina or Pontresina with bike or train), a detailed route scedule is necessary. It is highly recommended to take along a map.
