The Muretto pass
Mountain Hike
· Bregaglia
An important passage, direct connection between Bergell and Valmalenco. In ancient times it represented a precious traffic line for the transport of goods between the Valtellina and the northern areas.
difficult
Distance 15.9 km
The width of the mule track, especially on the Valmalenco side, testifies to the importance of this passage. Less noticeable is the footpath on the north side in the highest part, which is probably due to the fact that in earlier epochs there was constant snow here. The route offers a splendid view of the surrounding mountains, in particular the north face of Monte Disgrazia, which can be admired at length on the descent to Valmalenco.
Author’s recommendation
Overnight stay in Chiareggio and return hike the next day via the Forno saddle (difficult).

Turn-by-turn directions
You set off at the last hairpin bends of the Maloja Pass. A short road leads to a large parking lot ("Cavloccio"). You then walk along the wide country road that leads to the houses of Salecina and, after the bridge over the Orlegna stream, continue until you reach the enchanting Cavloc lake. Leaving the lake behind, you walk through scattered woods over beautiful clearings until you reach a fork, close to the small dam of Plan Canin. The path up to the Muretto Pass turns left and descends briefly to cross a footbridge over the Orlegna. Now you enter the wide gully of the Muretto valley on the path that climbs in short bends on the ortographically right side of the valley. On the saddle that closes the valley in height, the last part of the ascent route appears. Without going to the snow field in the middle of the slope, keep to the left, where a track in the scree slope leads to the elevation located in the middle of the passage. On the other side you start the descent, still staying on the left. The wide mule track takes a sloping course, with some wide bends. In this way you reach the open space of Alp dell'Oro; unique on this stretch is the view of Monte Disgrazia. The last part of the route leads to the village of Chiareggio and the road to Chiesa in Valmalenco (bus stop).
