The route from Maloja to the lake, to the pass and to Piz Lunghin is a justly famous and much frequented hike, on well-marked paths in pleasant surroundings. From the lake, experienced hikers can reach the top of Piz Lunghin and for those who want to extend the hike, the descent to the Septimer Pass offers the possibility to make a round trip that ends in Casaccia.
Author’s recommendation
From the lake continue for about 30 min to the watershed
The hike branches off from the Engadine road between the Hotel Lunghin and the Protestant church of Maloja. A signpost marks the footpath, which soon leads into a natural road. This road ends at the nearby houses of Pila. You take up the footpath again, which turns to the right and leads in a slight incline to a footbridge over the Inn. A nice track goes up the slope with frequent hairpin bends. You continue to climb up the steep slope, which is followed by a shallow depression. Here you cross the stream again and with a last climb you reach the fringe, where on the other side Lake Lunghin appears.
The continuation to the Lunghin pass takes a flat course towards the west and then rises a bit between rocky ridges. At the end, the path goes through the middle of a valley basin and finally to the right on the wide saddle of the pass.
The descent follows the same route.
To Piz Lunghin : After the rocky elevations above the lake, it is advisable to leave the main path and follow a marked track that gradually goes to the left along the line of a flattened moraine hill. Often you cross some gentle snowfields along the way. Subsequently, climb more decisively to the west ridge of the mountain, and on this always follow the trail tracks to the summit (2780 m). Going down, it is better to follow the ridgewhere a nice footpath continues flat and leads to the saddle of the Lunghin pass.
